Happy Food – “A good food blog for happy eating”

I created Happy Food to celebrate the joy that comes from growing, sourcing, cooking and sharing food with family and friends. This site will house recipes, gardening musings, entertaining ideas, and local (and not-so-local) favorite food finds. I’ll share my own creations as well as wonderful tried and true recipes from others. I’ll also post about where I’ve lived and traveled since much of my inspiration comes from regional cuisine. Finally, I hope the recipes here inspire you to try something new and share it around the table with those you love.

Around the table

Sitting around the table is one of our favorite ways to spend time together. Whether it’s with our immediate family, extended family or wonderful friends, we do our best to make the most of these moments.

We break out the cloth napkins, pour the wine, turn on the music, and linger for hours, talking, laughing and enjoying each other’s company. Food is, of course, central to the event, but it’s the people and conversation that make it extra special.

We share ideas, talk about the events of the world, music, history, movies, tv, and do our best to solve all of life’s problems while laughing a whole lot along the way.

My daughter wrote her college entrance essay about the “Family Table”, which solidified what I already knew: the time spent around the table is truly something to cherish.

Why Happy Food?

Why Happy Food? For those of you who have sat around our table or invited us to your home, you know we always begin our meals with a very sweet tradition started in my husband’s family. After our words of thanks, we hold hands and say “Happy Food – squeeze squeeze”.

During “squeeze squeeze”, we squeeze each other’s hands to let each other know that we are especially thankful for not just the food, but for the people sitting around the table at that very moment.

The phrase “Happy Food” is rooted in my sister-in-law’s time studying abroad. Italians say “Buon Appetito” before and during a meal. The literal translation is “Good Appetite”, but it really means “Enjoy your meal”. Our family’s version of this phrase morphed into “Happy Food” … and the rest is history!
