Out and About – Cape Cod (Orleans), MA

After a year and a half of social distancing and staying home, we finally stepped “Out and About” for a mini-vacation. A few days on Cape Cod was a perfect way to both reconnect with the world and also be together as a family. Our days were filled with walks, ocean and bay beach visits, lighthouses, cribbage on the deck, and of course, food!

Our breakfast each morning came courtesy of our wonderful Innkeepers at the Ship’s Knees Inn, in Orleans, MA. Ship’s Knees is just up the hill from Nauset Beach, an easy walk to stunning views of seals, dunes, and ocean sunrises. They have a wide variety of rooms, including the apartment where we stayed. Breakfast was a delicious variety of fruits, veggies, yogurt, overnight oats, and other treats. Breakfast is usually buffet style, but due to COVID restrictions, they bagged it individually for each room. The buffet breakfast photo shown here is from a previous stay in 2017.

For lunch each day, we took advantage of the full kitchen in the apartment and made salads, served with either boiled eggs or egg scrambles. My brother and sister-in-law, avid gardeners who also keep chickens, supplied the eggs and fresh lettuce and veggies. We supplemented the vegetables with some produce from our weekly Misfits Market box. Nothing beats fresh greens!

Lobster Roll, Carrot and Apple Slaw, and Onion Rings, The Knack, Orleans, MA

Our favorite dinner of the three day trip was the amazing Lobster Rolls we had at The Knack, Orleans, MA. The lobster, tossed with a light lemon mayo and topped with chives, was nothing short of spectacular. The bib lettuce protected the roll from the moisture of the lobster, so no soggy bun. Filled with a generous portion of claw meat, it was one of the most delicious lobster rolls we’ve had. Onion rings and carrot-apple slaw, both prepared to perfection, rounded out the meal. The next time you are heading up Rt. 6A through Orleans, stop and give it a try!
